Sunday = Final Day of PDX Pop Now! 2008

It’s been a beautiful weekend of Portland music, and, alas, there is but one more day.

We’ll greet you Sunday, July 27 at noon when Wooden Indian Burial Ground kick off Day 3, and we’ll waive to you as you leave that night after New Bloods put PPN!08 to bed.

Meanwhile, don’t forget about our PPN! flickr group, twitter, Urban Honking liveblogging, live PRA/KPSU stream and podcasting, facebook, myspace etc. all of which I am too tired to link to here, but are noted elsewhere on this page.

Til the morrow!

One Day Until PDX Pop Now! 2008

One day and it’s showtime! Needless to say, smiles are getting wider at PPN! headquarters, and our pulses are quickening…

A few notes:

1) If you are interested in volunteering for the festival and haven’t been in touch yet, come out to the last volunteer orientation meeting:

Thursday, July 24

2) Looks like we’re not the only ones psyched about this year’s festival lineup. Check out some of the recent press encouragement:

So excited about local music and the PDX Pop Now! 2008 festival that you can’t sit still? Put that energy to good use by volunteering at the festival!

We will be holding several volunteer meetings this week in the run-up to the festival, and we would love to see you there. We need help during the big weekend with all sorts of things, from band guiding, to stage managing, to greeting, to moving gear- no experience or skills of any kind necessary (though let us know if you’ve got some!).

The volunteer meetings will take place as follows:

Backspace (115 NW 5th Ave.)
Wednesday, July 23rd, at 6 p.m
Thursday, July 24th, at 5 p.m.

Send an email to volunteer@pdxpopnow.com with any questions.

Hope to see you there!

And I hope you are as excited about the fest as we are.

2008 Compilation, Festival Dates & Venue Announced

We’re incredibly pleased to announce some juicy details about this year’s PDX Pop Now! festival and compilation.

For starters, our FREE, ALL AGES festival will take place July 25-27 at Rotture (roh-TUR-ay), a live music venue located in Portland’s inner Southeast industrial district. Rotture inhabits the space formerly occupied by former venues Loveland and Meow Meow, home to our first three festivals, and we’re delighted to be returning there for our fifth anniversary. As with last year’s event at Audiocinema, one stage will be inside (in Rotture’s large downstairs room) while the second will be located outdoors in the street, furthering the festival’s inclusive, block-party vibe.

As always, the festival will feature nearly 50 of Portland’s finest bands, and just to whet your appetite, here’s a brief initial lineup:

The Builders & The Butchers * New Bloods * Panther * Starfucker * Atole SubArachnoid Space * Reporter * Argumentix * Meth Teeth * Guidance Counselor World’s Greatest Ghosts * Y La Bamba *
Hutch & Kathy of The Thermals (tentative)

Many more artists are still to be announced; please check our schedule page for updates.

PDX Pop Now! 2008, our fifth 2-disc compilation of Portland music, will be available for purchase for a quite economical $8 starting Tuesday, June 17, at Portland-area retail outlets and online at CD Baby. Previously unreleased tracks from Portland artists Faux Hoax (the new project from Danny Seim of Menomena, Dave Allen of Gang of Four and John Askew), Blitzen Trapper, YACHT, The Joggers, Talkdemonic, Horse Feathers, Yellow Swans, Au and Pink Martini highlight the 40-track collection, which features additional gems from local favorites Chromatics, Valet, New Bloods, Panther, Sandpeople and more. We also extended an open invitation to our city’s musicians to submit music for consideration for the album, and selections culled from the work submitted by more than 400 artists round out the album, which, in a display of Portland’s tremendous musical diversity, features genres from indie rock, laptop-pop and hip hop to folk, ambient, psychedelia, jazz, noise, and metal. Visit our CD page to see the full tracklisting.

OLCC VOTES YES!!!!!!!!

In a unanimous 4-0 vote on Friday, April 18 (with Commissioner Fisker not in attendance and therefore in abstention), the Oregon Liquor Control Commission voted to amend their Minor Postings rules, thereby making more all-ages concerts and other cultural events possible in Oregon.

This is a huge victory for musicians, artists, communities and, most importantly, young people.

Now get out there and encourage your favorite venues to get a Minor VI posting so they can make your favorite bands’ shows open to people of all-ages!

The PDX Pop Now! OLCC page will be updated soon with more information, but for now, let’s celebrate.

OLCC Minor Postings Vote on Friday

All-Ages Music Update Update:

The OLCC will be making its final decision on the Minor Postings issue this coming Friday, April 18 at 9am.

The meeting will be held in room 103A at the OLCC headquarters at 9079 SE McLoughlin Blvd., Portland, OR, 97222.

If adopted, the proposed changes to the OLCC’s Minor Postings rules will allow for more all-ages concerts in environments deemed appropriate for minors, a major victory for Oregonians of all ages who believe in the power of the arts to engage and empower young people in constructive ways, and to build stronger, more vibrant communities.

The session is open to the public, and there will be a brief window prior to the vote open for short public testimony. If you would like to speak, it is important to sign up when you arrive and to keep your comments focused, positive, responsible and cordial.

Remember, this issue is fundamentally about access to arts and culture for young people, so speaking to the benefits of safe, fun, regulated recreational options for teenagers in an inclusive environment is the way to go.

Here goes nothin’!

Compilation Submissions Deadline Extended to March 7

Due to popular demand and to allow musicians some extra time to put the finishing touches on those mixes they didn’t quite complete by the original February 29 cut-off, we’re extending the deadline for submissions for our 2008 compilation to this Friday, March 7.

We’ve received a thrilling volume of submissions so far and hope that by extending the deadline we’ll be able to put together an even more consistent and inclusive compilation.

Submission forms, detailed submission guidelines and more information on the compilation album are available on our CD page.

And don’t forget that we’re now taking requests for the 2008 festival and that you could help make exciting changes to current OLCC rules concerning all-ages access to music.

We're Now Taking Requests for 2008 Festival

We’re now taking artist and band requests for PDX Pop Now! 2008. Visit our Requests page and tell us which Portland and Portland-area acts you’d like to see perform at this year’s festival and maybe even help us learn about some undiscovered or under-recognized local music gems. We’re looking for artists from all the genres comprising our city’s vibrant and varied music community – folk and rock, country and hip hop, jazz and electronic and so forth. We promise to research and listen to every band requested, as always, so every request counts.

Last year, we received nearly 20,000 requests from 3,000 individuals for 1,600 Portland-area artists and bands, easily a record number for us and one we hope you’ll help us break this year.

In other news, we’re still accepting submissions for our 2008 compilation of Portland music. Area musicians have until Friday, February 29, to submit original works for consideration. Guidelines and a downloadable submission form are available on our CD page.

Submissions Now Open for 2008 Compilation

We’re now accepting music submissions for the fifth annual PDX Pop Now! compilation. (And let me be the first to say, happy 5-Year Anniversary to us!) So, Portland and Portland-area musicians, if you’ve got a gem of a song you know would be perfect for our latest and (hopefully) greatest collection and would like to submit it for consideration, here’s what you do:

1. Download the compilation submission form.
2. Print and thoroughly and legibly complete the form.
3. Mail the completed form and a disc with your track (CD-quality, non-compressed audio files only, please) to:

PDX Pop Now!
P.O. Box 14828
Portland, OR 97214

The submission deadline is February 29. We’re looking for original material only – no covers – and for work from a diverse array of genres. “Pop” may be in our name but we’re open to all the types of music comprising our vibrant and varied community, so PDX artists in all styles, please send us your goods.

*A special note for hip hop and electronic artists: please make certain all relevant audio samples in your submissions have been legally cleared.

Direct any questions regarding submissions and the compilation here. Good luck, and we look forward to listening to what you’ve got.

OLCC All-Ages Vote Thursday Morning

This is it! The exciting conclusion to our all-ages reform campaign! Show up to the OLCC vote Thursday and make your support for all-ages music known!

The OLCC commissioners will be convening at 9am on Thursday, December 13 to vote on the proposed changes to the Minor Postings rules. The vote is open to the public and will take place at OLCC Headquarters (9079 SE McLoughlin Blvd. Portland, OR 97222-7355).

If you need a ride to the vote, a carpool will be meeting and leaving at 8:30am at the Musicians Union (325 NE 20th Portland, OR 97232). We would love to have a strong showing to demonstrate our enthusiasm and support for these changes.

If approved, these changes will make more all-ages music venues in Oregon viable by allowing minors and alcohol in the same establishment, provided proper control and regulation are in place to keep liquor out of kids’ hands. This would have a profoundly positive effect on all aspects of our state’s youth and music communities.

Let’s fix this nonsense together!

DEADLINE: OLCC All-Ages Reform

Just a reminder that Tuesday, November 13 at 5pm is the deadline for submitting feedback to the OLCC about their proposed rule changes that would allow music venues and other art spaces to admit minors and still sell alcohol (i.e. stay in business). Send your emails in support of the changes to:
jennifer.hunstman@state.or.us

For more information on this issue, or to see a sample email, check out www.pdxpopnow.com/olcc

Opening more music and cultural events to people under 21 is the right thing to do for young people, local musicians, venues, and our community as a whole.

These emails will play an absolutely critical role in the OLCC’s ultimate decision to adopt or reject the proposed changes, so take a minute to write in today.

Additionally, in an effort to provide the young people of Portland with an opportunity to speak for themselves on this matter, the Multnomah Youth Commission is holding a public forum to accept testimony on the proposed OLCC changes
from 4-5:30pm
on Monday, November 12
at Portland City Hall in Council Chambers (1221 SW 4th Ave.).
All are welcome to attend, but priority will be given to those under 21.
Spread the word!

Support The OLCC's All-Ages Music Reforms

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission is currently considering making changes to its rules that would allow music venues and other art spaces to both admit minors and sell alcohol. This would greatly increase access to live music for people under 21—a tremendously positive development for Oregon’s music communities, benefitting kids, bands, businesses and the public welfare alike.

Take a minute to send an email to the OLCC before November 13 expressing your support for these rule changes.
Filled with excellent tunes sure to appeal to newcomers to PDX music and consumate insiders alike, this is our most diverse album yet, featuring styles and genres from the indie rock and pop for which Portland may be best known to hip hop, jazz, and, for the first time, metal. The two-disc collection also serves up both rare treats from artists you probably know well (check the stunning Decemberists demo) and tantalizing bites from names you’ll probably want to get to know a lot better, like high school pop sensations The Hugs.

As The Oregonian just said in its review of the compilation, “Altogether, PDX Pop Now! 2007 is a statement that attests to the DIY cool of Portland as well as to the stellar quality of music right here, right now. It also underscores a point: Not every town can do this. Good for us.”

DISC 1

2007 Festival: August 3-5 at AudioCinema

We’re extremely pleased to announce that the Fourth Annual PDX Pop Now! Festival will be held August 3-5 at AudioCinema, an incredible arts and performance space in the inner SE Portland warehouse district near the Hawthorne Bridge and a self-described “factory for art, music, and dreams” which will help us realize our dream once again of showcasing some of the city’s finest bands.

As always, the festival will be completely FREE, open to people of ALL AGES, and feature upwards of 50 of your favorite Portland acts, but, for the first time, half of the event will take place outside. That’s right: one of our two stages will be open air!

Please check back for updates on the lineup.

PDX Pop Now! Bringing Local Music Stars
to Middle School

In what we hope will be just the first of many such events, PDX Pop Now! has arranged for a diverse group of spectacular local musicians to perform a special show at Parkrose Middle School. On May 4, students qualifying for “Re-leaf” – the school’s incentive program for homework completion – will be treated to an afternoon of topnotch tunes from rising-star jangle-poppers The Shaky Hands, rocksteady emcee Syndel, soulful folkstress Alela Diane, and positive rapper Soul P..

Now, we know this a fantastic bill, but only “Re-leaf” eligible students (about 2/3 of the Parkrose student body), members of the press, and reps from other local music organizations like the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls, Old Library Studio and Spun Academy – who will be on hand to fill the kids in on some great music programs – will be allowed to attend. Prior to the concert, the performers will also participate in classes including Band, Choir, and Language Arts, and will speak to the students about their music backgrounds and experiences, the creative process, the music business and the Portland music community, etc..

As Cary Clarke (PDX Pop Now! board member and Parkrose English Language Learners teacher) says of the show, “How cool would you have thought it was if some amazing bands and musicians had come to your middle school, hung out with you, and ended the day with a concert. I know I would have felt differently about my education.”

PDX Pop Now! is sincerely proud and excited to take this step towards connecting local musicians and local kids, some of whom just may become the future stars of Portland music.

The polls are closed – so to speak – and now we begin poring over the results: between our online requests page and request boxes placed around town, we received nearly 20,000 requests for bands to play this year’s festival, more than double the number placed last year. Thanks to all of you who took the time to tell us which artists you’d like to see perform.

We’ve already begun researching and listening to the bands requested – it looks like 1,000 at least – so please check back for announcements about the lineup to see which acts you’ll have helped us select for the festival.

This sharp new look is courtesy of local designer Dan Stiles who’ll also be putting together the album art for this year’s compilation, and generally guiding the pdxpop visual aesthetic this year.

Give the Gift of PDX Music this Holiday!

Just a suggestion for those with some Christmas shopping left to do: the PDX Pop Now! 2006 music compilation and PDX Popped! – a DVD of nine electrifying performances from the 2005 festival – make the perfect (and cheap!) stocking stuffers for the music lovers on your list.

But don’t take our word for it. Here’s what Luciana Lopez, music editor for the Oregonian, has to say about the comp, one of her top picks in the recent “Wired Gift Guide” from the Oregonian A&E:

“The notes to this double disc [comp], celebrating the annual music festival, read like a Who’s Who of Portland music. Colin Meloy of Decembersists fame does his version of folk ballad “Barbara Allen,” while The Blow chip in the spare electro-pop “Babay (Eat a Critter, Feel Its Wrath).” Hip-hop is well represented, with Vursatyl of the Lifesavas, Ms. Su’ad and Cool Nutz. Though the wide range of contributors means the discs don’t have much of a unifying aesthetic, what is consistent is the quality throughout.”

Produced by local DIY filmmakers Skratch Films, PDX Popped! captures Viva Voce, Nice Nice, The Blow, Talkdemonic, and five other acts tearing up the Loveland’s stage at the Second Annual PDX Pop Now! Music Festival and makes an ideal companion gift to the compilation.

PDX Pop Now! 2006 retails for a mere $7, while PDX Popped! goes for $8-$9. Both are available at local independent record stores and select retail outlets including:

Everyday Music (Downtown, Eastside, and Beaverton)
Music Millenium (Northwest and Eastside)
Jackpot Records (Downtown and Hawthorne)
Ozone Records 03
Q is for Choir
